5 pieces of Catfish and 4 pieces 16/20 Shrimp with 2 sides and fresh baked French bread
The food was great & the staff excellant. Will be goin' back quite a few times.
We had dinner on a Friday night around 8. The first impressions were okay as the parking was good, it was easy to find the restaurant and when we arrived the restaurant was mostly empty. Then we tried to order and trying to understand the menu options was not obvious. The staff helped describe the options and we decided on one Secret menu option (which btw is not a secret and doesn't require becoming a VIP member because the secret menu is listed on the wall). We ordered the Gumbo ya ya and the combo supper of shrimp and catfish. When the food arrived, it was on paper plates with plastic utensils...so this is more of a fast food place than a sit down, nice dinner restaurant. The ambience is okay but it was hard to determine noise level as there were customers at 2-3 other tables. The shrimp and catfish were breaded in heavy cornmeal and the cornmeal was all you could taste. My date had never had catfish..she still hasn't tasted it because of the heavy, dominating cornmeal. We ordered greens and rice and beans as the sides with the combo and they were okay. The gumbo ya ya had a good flavor but it came with a piece of crab that was, ahh simply put bad. Besides the poor flavor, the crab was not cracked and I had to ask for a crab cracker, which was made available and that is how I was able to get a small piece of meat and I stopped after tasting the small piece. While the service was okay to start with, once the food was served, the servers disappeared. No one came to the table to ask if we needed anything and then when I needed more water, I stood at the bar for a couple of minutes before anyone helped... while two employees sat at the bar and ate. Overall, we left half of the food on the plates as it was not satifying and we both agreed it was barely okay. I can't recommend Darrows unless you swing by and grab a bowl of gumbo to go. That would be the only thing I would ever consider if I returned. Which is doubtful.
